Mar. 4th, 2026 10:40 amThe Etruscan female demon/goddess of death who lives in the underworld, Vanth is associated with death and the journey of the deceased to the Underworld, but in a variety of different ways; she is present in scenes of the moment of death as well in scenes where the deceased is already fully dead and journeying to the Underworld. She is depicted as a benevolent psychopompian figure, in contrast to the menacing Charun, her sometime companion. Her direct superiors are Aita (Hades) and his queen, Phersipnei (Persephone).
Appearance:
Vanth usually appears as a pretty, slightly built young woman, with long hair and light coloured eyes. The colours may vary, but generally speaking, her hair tends to be brown and her eyes blue. Occasionally, she has wings, as per her whim, which are adorned with eyes and allow her to be omniscient, the better to aid her in finding souls in need of her assistance. These wings are feathered, usually in shades of brown.
Her dress is usually that of a short chiton with detached sleeves and fur boots and often has a sheathed sword attached to her belt. She carries the key to the Underworld around her neck at all times, on an unbreakable chain. From time to time, she is also accompanied by snakes, which are usually wound around her arms. If these are present, it will be clearly noted in her post/comments.
Abilities:
As not only a guide of the dead, but an assistant of it as well, to those who are terminally ill, or dead, her presence is usually calming. It is her duty to help the dead accept their new place in the Underworld on their own terms and then to physically guide them there, and will not to force them into it against their will. Vanth is not a harbinger of death and as such cannot tell when a specific individual will die; she is simply drawn to those whose mortality is fading or have recently lost it.
